Symphonia Rehearsal Recording

Downton Abbey

Incredibles

Skyfall

BY FRIDAY, MARCH 28TH AT MIDNIGHT:

- For each song, list specific measures with issues and how we should fix them.  For example:

"Downton, measure 30: tempo change causes us to fall apart.  We can fix by watching, listening, counting.
Downton, measure 47: eighth notes aren't together.  Fix by subdividing.
Incredibles, measure 112: dynamics aren't present.  Create change in dynamics with bow placement and speed.
Skyfall, measure 438: intonation in the Bbs isn't low enough.  Fix by extending first finger back towards scroll."

  2. On downton abbey, once it gets to the triplets, it starts to fall apart a little but. I need to fix that by practicing the bow movement. My arm gets mixed up. I also need to count in my head because i get lost really easily in this piece. The ending also needs some practice.

The incredible is sounding really good. I think be could really work on the dynamics because it is mostly in tune. But overall, i think it sounds really cool. We can add dynamics by bow speed and pressure.

Skyfall:at the beginning, not everyone is stopping the tremolo at the same time. We need to count. There are also barely any dynamics. Some intonation issues as well. We need to be aware of the key signature.

  3. Downton Abbey: Our dynamics should be more precise, and since the notes are so repetitive, I tend to stop counting. In Measures 29-37, we aren't together and the tremelo sounds off.

The incredibles: Measures 11-20 could be more separated and I think the intonation is off. We could use a louder forte and a softer piano.

Skyfall: The first and last measure could have better dynamics. We stop counting so at one part everything falls apart. Our intonation and rhythms are kind of off.

  4. Ok so on Downton Abbey at measure 16-18 the viola don't do the crescendo and decrescendo and some viola need to read the change at measure 17 where it goes from A,C to C,A in the 8th notes. At 45 I can't hear the violas'.

The Incredibles there is a major lack of dynamics at least within the violas. At the end we need we need to make a more dramatic dynamic change to increase the effect of it.

Skyfall the violas and I do believe the cellos did "Skyfall" at 30 and I think the viola have the melody and I could hear it but it can't be heard.
I need to work on downton abbey the most especialy at 45 because my fingers won't keep up with the tempo and I will work on the dymanics for The Incredibles and will work on counting at 28-40 on Skyfall

  5. In Downton Abbey, we really need to work on dynamics because it changes the entire piece. We also need to work on our counting, mainly in when we begin the triplets because this section is very messy sounding.
The Incredibles, is easily our strongest piece so far however it's still not as great as it could be. The intonation and rhythm is, for the most part, correct. We really just need to add the dramatic dynamics that are in the piece.
In Skyfall, I believe the main concern is intonation. I just felt the entire piece was played disregarding the key signature. We should also bring out the dynamics because the piece is coming off very bland.

  6. Downtown Abbey: The dynamics are completely non-existent, and need a lot of attention. The counting at measure 40 and 61.
Incredibles: Once again, dynamics need the most work, but counting throughout would also help. Another thing, for cellos and basses, is that the intonation of the E flat and B flat in 28-29 and 33-39, respectively.
Skyfall: Dynamics are also a problem, but intonation is also pretty bad. The piece sounds sharp throughout, but that can be fixed by practicing.

    ReplyDelete
  7. skyfall: the dynamics needs attention.I think the basses can be louder so other sections can hear us. the piece is not that bad it just needs some cleaning up here and there.
the incredibles: counting and dynamics is the main problem here. the basses I know need to work on measure 7-11 to make it sound cleaner. also measure 71 were need to do the dynamic markings to end the piece strong.
downtown abby: you cant hear any dynamics what so ever. also we all need to work on the 6/8 sections and start counting.

  8. Downton: In measure 3, the intonation of fourth finger is off, and the firsts don`t come in as a strong group. When in measure 29, we sound like choppy waves slamming on a ship and sound smooth at all, we can fix this by using more bow and by limiting the amount of pressure we have on the bow. It also seems that by the second page we manage to actually sound like a group and we seem to listen to one another, for a while. I think that most of our problems can be solved my playing louder, using more bow ( for firsts), and paying attention to each section.
The Incredibles: For theses, accents are elemental in order to create a strong, superhero vibe,;however, accents are not really heard. In measure 7, the cellos seemed staggered, this can be fixed my looking up, since the last note in measure 6 is basically a non-moving note. Also, the first violins don`t really stick together, this can be solved by listening to the lower-strings, because they provide a steady beat.
Skyfall: In measure 2, the first violins are not coming in at the same time, we can fix this by counting and by looking up. We remain pretty silent throughout the entire piece, and the firsts are barely audible over the other instruments. The song sounds choppy, we can fix this by using more bow( for firsts).
We can also improve by splitting into two orchestras. When we were in groups for our previous concert, we were able to hear each section better because we were so close.

  9. Downton: 29-37 the seconds need work with intonation and sound quality of those slurs. Then by counting and subdividing we can focus on staying together on the 8th notes throughout the piece.
Skyfall: The piece sounds good but BIG work needs to be done on accents and dynamics throughout the piece. And these problems can be fixed by maybe doing sectional work.
Incredibles: Work on dynamics is extremely important t give this piece more of this superhero feel instead of the mush that is happening right now and ways that we can fix this are by using more pressure on our bows and maybe more of our bows as well.

  10. Downton: The dynamics of the entire piece could be improved. The piece could start to get boring if we don't spice it up. This means loud crescendos and precise notes. The violas need to work on making every note clear by paying attention and counting.
Incredibles: We definitely need to improve our accents in this piece. It has a lot of potential, and we can't play it just "blah". We can fix this by changing the bow speed and pressure. The audience needs to get a super hero feel from this piece. Especially in measures 1-7. This is the opening, and can determine the entire interpretation of the piece. We need to be extra careful here and make sure dynamics and accents are strong.
Skyfall: The overall intonation in this piece could be improved. I has trouble hearing what notes were being played. We can fix this simply by practicing this piece more.

  11. Downton Abbey: Overall I think the main issue with this piece is that it's boring due to a total lack of dynamics. Since the piece minimalism, we need to work on dynamics to actually make it interesting. Also, getting to and staying with the actual tempo will be a problem since the cellos still fall apart from measures 45 to 61. The fingering appears to be the problem, so practicing it at a slower tempo and working our way up would help.
Incredibles: We have the general idea of the piece but it isn't really "incredible" at all, so I think we need to work on dynamics and accents especially. For example, the part that cellos have at measure 7 and then later at 45 is supposed to be accented and strong but it still sounds weak, so we need to work on the bowing for that part by playing with more of a bounce.
Skyfall: This piece has huge potential, but as of now, it's more of a disgrace to Adele because we definitely don't play it the way she sings it. This can be fixed by changing the bowing style. For example the melody needs to be more legato. Also the overall intonation needs work, especially extensions such as the C sharps that the cellos have in measure 5. In addition the cellos need to be more in tune when they have the melody at measure 33.

  12. Incredibles: measure 7 & 8 and 45-54 was a mess with the cellos. Some came in early and some came in late and others came on time but it just sort of clumped into one big ball of Errrr... That happened. Some were staccato others had a weird staccato/normal bowing going on. Also, there were no dynamics. And something funky happened with the e flat. Somewhere in measures 26-39. This all could be avoided we either take the up bow in parentheses seriously and or count on when to stop and change to measure 7.
Skyfall: I heard the cellos overpowering the other children. It was also one dynamic and it was forte. Measure 33 on the shifting is a bit rough. Not fully shifting to the correct area and being either too flat or sharp. And also the measure we have C sharps turned a bit funky. Especially, going from f sharp to c sharp then f sharp. Going from c sharp to f sharp (I know I have a problem of this) I think we think that the extended four for c sharp will be the same place for f sharp by just switching over but it might out a bit flat because the fingerboard is round and not straight. So, I guess just calculate a little bit of where the fourth finger goes.
Downton Abbey: that measure... Measure 41- 60 it trips up some cellist. But I'm sure with practice and muscle memory the measure will soon be better and be a lot smoother. Measure 103 was a bit sloppy. Not really pronouncing each note but just kind of running over it. This can be avoided by not moving the hand so quickly that the bow is left in the dust trying to keep up. Or the bow is faster than the hand and it leaves the measure all weird. My solution would be to run it slower and slowly creep up the speed to really pronounciate the notes.

  13. Downton Abbey: The main issue with this piece is that it completely lacks all dynamics. The piece is very repetitive so, we need to work on dynamics to actually make it interesting. Also, staying with the actual tempo is an issue from measures 45 to 61 for the cellos. The fingering is the main problem, so practicing it at a slower tempo and working our way up would help.

The Incredibles: This piece is better than the rest but it is also repetitive and boring, so I think we need to work on dynamics and accents especially in order for it to be more exciting. For example, the part that cellos have at measure 7 and then later at 45 is supposed to be accented and strong but it sounds muddy and hesitant. Therefore, we need to work on the bowing for that part by playing confidently and with a bouncier movement.

Skyfall: This piece is weak and doesn't sound as confident as Adele sings it. The whole thing needs help in dynamics because they do not exist when we play it. Another thing is that the strength of this piece can be fixed by changing the bowing style like how the melody could sound more legato. Also the overall intonation needs work, much like the C sharp extensions that the cellos have in measure 5. Finally, the cellos need to be more in tune when they have the melody at measure 33 and they need to work on the shifting in measure 34.

Downton Abbey: our orchestra plays Downton Abbey very well but there is absolutely no dynamics what so ever. the second violins need to work on measures 30-60 and the whole orchestra needs to work on their dynamics and accents. and the first violins need to work on measures 2-10 and keeping there E an A in tune.
The Incredibles: and this piece orchestra plays dynamics very well but we can still use more and more accidents the cellos needs to work on their pick up in measure 7 because it sounds all smushed together and it confuses the rest of the instruments and make them start playing the wrong things.
Skyfall: this is one of the easiest piece in our orchestras pop concert but there is absolutely zero dynamics whatsoever it sounds like a group of middle schoolers are playing this piece when we play it. and the first violins needs to work in there pick up and measure 3 because it sounds wired last but not least the whole orchestra needs to work on there fingering for sharps

  15. Downton Abbey: It sounds like the people with the boring parts aka the violas got lost in the beginning. To fix this I suggest doing what I did in my music and color code every measure or so with a highlighter so if your eyes wander, you'll know where to pick up. At measure 45, it sounds like some people really need to learn how to do those eighth notes, and at a faster speed. At measure 103, it is hard to figure out when the violas are supposed to come in, so if the cellos could play their part more prominently, that would be so helpful. Dynamics also need improvement.

Incredibles: We need a stronger entrance. It sounds weak. What super hero sounds like they're ballroom dancing? At measure 64, playing with more aggression could help the dynamic situation.

Skyfall: The quarter notes at the beginning could be played more legato (they sound the same as the eighth notes in 15 as of right now). Also, the violas seem unsure as to where they should come in at 32. Make sure to count guys. The whole piece could use a bit of sharpening up as it just sounds really mushy at the moment.

  16. The Incredibles: This piece isn't all that bad. It's supposed to be our most exciting piece, but it's boring. Our dynamics do not change at all. Also, the cellos and basses could work on staying together in measure 7 because it sounds mushy.

Downton Abbey: The whole piece is somewhat boring. We need to actually play the dynamics and clean up the notes. In measure 45-60, it is hard to play at a fast tempo, but individually practicing it will help. Also, in measure 103, violas need to know when to come in and be louder.

Skyfall: I think we have major intonation issues. We also have difficulty with balance. Everyone needs to back off a little so we could hear the violins more better. The violins could also play more gracefully and moving. They could fix that by using more bow and dynamics. In measure 33, cellos and violas could clean up the melody. Everyone could also add dynamics.

  17. -Incredibles: From measures 26-29, I feel like we need to work on the rhythms. There are still a little iffy. Also, do the accents and the staccato markings.
-Skyfall: We need a BIG improvement on our dynamics. It's a very boring piece. Also, the rhythms need a lot practice and help.
-Downton Abbey: Our dynamics are just so bland in this piece. We are just playing the notes. Also, the C-E-A, measures 29-37 for v2, part for everyone still needs improvement. It's not very clear, just very smooshy( if that's a word).

    ReplyDelete
  18. Downton Abbey: I think overall this piece sounds all the same because we lack a change in dynamics. We have to a bad problem with rushing especially the cello's. I also think in measures 37-44 the cello's need to clean up that section because the slurs are a mess.

Skyfall: I think everyone needs to back off a bit because i can rarely ever here the Violins, since they have the melody most the time they should be the loudest. The C sharps that the cello's have are never in tune. In measure 33-38 the Cello's need to come in with more confidence. At measure 49 to the end we need to do all the dynamics because it'll add the emotion that is lacking.

Incredibles: In this piece we to add the dynamics to make it seem more interesting. In measure seven the cello's need to work on getting the notes more crisp or clean. The same fore measure 34. I feel like at times we rush while playing this piece or just some sections do at times. Also in the last measure we all need to remember to end at the frog.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Downton Abbey: We make this piece so boring. It has no dynamics which gives it no meaning or mood. We definitely need to put the dynamics into this piece. Measures 103-111 for the cellos was super mushy. I couldn't pick the notes out from one another. I can fix this by putting a little bit more space between the notes.

Incredible: First of all... what is going on in measures 7-11 and all measures alike for the cellos? I can only hear a couple people playing and it just sounds like a giant glob. You can't tell the notes apart from one another. I can fix this by bouncing my bow off the string to separate the notes and to actually make it sound biting, and I can also fix it by being mire confident when I play so that I can play louder.

Skyfall: In this piece I really struggle with measures 33-39. I have trouble counting the notes and getting my left hand in the right position. I can fix this by subsidizing and I can fix my left hand issue by practicing slowly then gradually speeding up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Incredibles: This piece sounds pretty rusty compared to what it could sound like. Having a strong beginning to the song (measures 1-7) could help the problem by coming off very strong and applying the accents. Accents are performed by putting more weight in the part of the bow.

Downton Abbey- the entire viola part sounds extremely sloppy. We need to make sure that we keep up with where we are in the song because of all the boring parts we lose our train of thought and do not remember to switch notes. Also, it would also help if all of us learned the triplet part, me included. I tried leaving one finger down but then all my fingers trip over eachother and its just a big mess D:

Skyfall- this could be an awesome piece if we threw in some dynamics. Also, we have some balance issues. At 7, when the 1st Violins have the melody, I can only hear the lower strings, but when the lower strings have the melody, all I can hear are upper strings. This piece kind of has an emotion to go along with it. Maybe if we watched a clip of the Skyfall movie we could feel the tone of the movie and apply it to the song

    ReplyDelete
  21. Skyfall: The C sharps weren't sharp. We need to put in dynamics to make it not boring and work on the balance of the piece.. The cellos need to work at their part at measure 33. We can also use the accents to make it less boring.

The Incredibles: We need to work on the dynamics on this piece as well. I think that is sounds as if we are playing the whole piece at one volume at about mf. Also the cellos should work on making the eighth notes more short and sharp.

Downton Abbey: This piece is just tedious right now. We do not play the dynamics in this piece either. (So obviously we should do some serious work with dynamics in all of the pieces). The cellos have those triplets that we really need to work on and stay together. Also, when playing the quarter notes, we could be somewhat less monotonous and play all of the crescendos. We just need to work on making this piece a little more exciting. Or all of the pieces more exciting!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Downton Abbey: We, of course, need to fix our dynamics because the piece sounds pretty monotone. Since we have the notes down we need to focus on the hairpins and the dynamic markings. The 2nd violins can barely be heard at measure 7. We need to be sure of ourselves and play with purpose. The violas at measure 103 are barely audible. I think that at measure 29, the violins need to make the triplets more dignified. This can be fixed by practicing the triplets more often.

The Incredibles: The beginning is really boring and slow. We need to accent those beginning notes in the first couple of measures to add some extra umph. For the violins at measure 11, those eight notes can fall apart at times and sound mushy. We need to subdivide and practice those notes so that way we can get to the dynamics and work on that. Also, the cellos sound terrible at measure 7. The cellos need to look up and subdivide when we get to this part because we cant have the metronome on at the concert. At measure 48, the cellos start to fall apart; we can fix that by subdividing .

Skyfall: We need major help on this music. The tremelo in the beginning sounds like everybody is choosing when to come in on their time. Their is also no dynamic so we have a plain sounding piece of music. The 2nd violins sound nonexistent as always. The cellos and violas can barely be heard when they get to their melody at measure 33 so we need to make sure that the cellos and violas can be heard and 2nd violins and 1st violins back off.

  23. Brooklyn Crabtree:
    Downton Abbey-
~Measure 1 (Violas & Cellos): We could improve dynamics by not only gradually increasing, but ensuring that the forzando is stressed more and then immediate piano, getting gradually louder. This change would likely start the piece in a much more exciting manner, making it as a whole less, well, boring.
~Measure 17&20 (Violas): We need to make sure that we are not starting the switched pattern of the notes and not ending late by counting at least from measure 11.
~Measures 67-102 (Violas): This section is boring and repetitive, but if we sharpened our dynamics, having a more obvious mezzo piano then gradual crescendo and decrescendo, it would become much more interesting. Also, I think that throughout the piece our fortes are doing nicely, but we need to work on making the quiet parts quieter.

    Incredibles:
~Measure 1 (everyone): We need to have a more dramatic intro by playing the accented forte with more force. It's not bad, but it could be better.
~Measure 9-10 (violas): We need to improve dynamics by making the difference between the forte and the piano more evident, giving us more room for the crescendo.
~Measures 30-33 (violas): I think it sounds okay and forte, but we need to work on the note mentioned above measure 30 "bring out" and make it a bit more fierce.
~Measure 36 (violins and violas): Not a real note, but that was a great intrance, strong, forte, and all together and it caught my attention so I wanted to say good job.
~Measures 50-51, 52-54, 57-58, 62-63 (violins and violas): The change in up-bow could be a bit less obvious. It doesn't sound bad, but by staggering our bow direction changes, it could sound amazing.
~Measure 67 (everyone): We all rush this measure because of the increase in dynamics, but if we count this last measure a bit more carefully, I think it will make for a fantastic almost-ending.

    Skyfall:
~Measure 1 (everyone? violas at least): The intonation of the first note is a bit off, so by making sure to check the extended sharp, it will not sound as awkward.
~Measures 7-14 (2nds and violas): I know we've worked on this, but the dynamics in the audio cover up the 1sts a bit, so making especially sure that we are playing piano will help even out the melody-harmony relationship.
~Measures 21-23 (everyone): The dynamics here are nonexistant, so make sure to make the crescendo from mezzo forte to forte more emphasized.
~Measures 32-38 (cellos and violas): This section needs to be more lyrical, not mushy or as strong as "The Incredibles", so by playing the slurs with less pauses when crossing over strings and making it flowy and emotional, which will make it sound more pleasurable to the audience.
~Measures 49-55 (everyone): The dynamics need to be strengthened and emphasized more here by playing the mezzo pianos quieter and the build up of forte more strongly.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Downton Abbey: I think the main issue of this piece is that it sounds extremely boring due to the lack of dynamics. If we add more dynamics, then it would definitely sound better. Also, when the first violins come in at measure 3, we are not as loud as we should be and we kind of get drowned out by everyone else. We can fix this by putting more weight on the bow and play closer to the bridge.

The Incredibles: We need to work on dynamics in this piece as well. As of right now, it sounds really boring and not superhero-like at all. Also, in measure 41, the outside 1st violins need to play out more.

Skyfall: Throughout this whole piece, the C's were not sharp and that caused it to sound disgusting. We can fix this by extending our third finger more. The dynamics are also nonexistent in this piece. Also, the first violins don't play loud enough and we are drowned out by everyone else. We can fix this by listening to each other and, obviously, playing louder.
