Ta-DA!!!! Here's your first recording of the semester. It's...not great. BUT!! BUT!!!!!! You're going to come up with a plan for how to fix it. After listening to today's recordings, submit (either here or written) a plan for how you are going to approach these three pieces. BE SPECIFIC if you want full credit!
Dragonfly
Aspire
Serendipity Suite
1. Take time daily to look over the dynamics of each piece. 2. Learn how to stay together and count beats better than before. 3. Practice the shifting on strings and how to keep the music together. 4. Fix the slurs that i occasionally do and accident. 5. Focus on the music in front of me and not get side tracked by the other melodies that my classmates have and try to mimic it.
ReplyDelete1. Look over the part I'm having the most trouble with. Pluck it a few times then arco. 2. Don"t go on auto piolet. Stay in tune and not off in space.
ReplyDelete3. Look up for cues and count the amount of rests to come in on time.
4. Make sure my key and time signature is correct and make sure I'm putting my fingers in the correct postion on the strings.
1. Take time and study the dynamics
ReplyDelete2. Learn how to listen and stay together
3. Practice on my shifting
5. Watch you more so i know when my cue to come in is
6. Fix bowings an slurs and practice on keeping my notes in tune
1.) Sit down and take time to actually learn the notes for all pieces, because I'm confused about some of them.
ReplyDelete2.) Sit down and learn the rythms as well. For all pieces.
3.) Relax and breathe and look at the bowings, use shorter bowing (for drangonfly mostly)
4.) Practice shifting by doing scales.
5.) Do scales to help practice bow control.
1. COUNT in Dragonflies.
ReplyDelete2.Use more bow in Aspire, mainly in the beginning.
3.Don't get ahead in Aspire by counting and listening more to the people around me.
4.Remember when to pizz. mainly in Serendipidity Suite at measure 35, then quickly switch to arco.
5.Do better with dynamics on ALL of the pieces.
My rehearsal plan for Aspire is to practice shifting more. I need to start out at a slow comfortable speed and gradually speed up the tempo until I can play the piece at the desired speed. I also need to work on moving my whole hand when I shift and not try to extend my fingers to lengths that they don't reach. This will help to make the notes flow better so they don't sound so choppy.
ReplyDeleteWhen practicing Dragonfly I need to make sure that I am counting so I don't get off. This piece is going to require me to practice more because it is fast, but the notes are basically being repeated so after practicing the beginning section I should be able to play the end section.
Serendipity Suite is challenging for me because there is so much going on in the piece. My plan to make this particular piece easier for me is to take my violin home more often and to become more familiar with the piece so that I will be more confident when playing in class.

For Serendipity Suite, I need to count much better and try not to speed up or get behind and stay with the tempo. I need to make sure my C sharps and D sharps are in tune, i recognize all tempo and dynamic markings, and I need to work on some of the bowings and make sure i have them correctly. In Dragonfly, my biggest issues were probably staying in tune and counting. I need to make sure to count for the full 8 measures so i don't come in early or late. i also need to fix my e flats and b flats and make sure those are really low. In Aspire, i need to make sure I pay attention to all of the times signature changes that are going on. If I don't pay closer attention to them, i get very lost and can't keep up. Another problem I'm having with Aspire is getting all of the right bowings and making sure I hit all of these slurs, so I'm going to have to pay close attention to all of the markings and make sure i play them all.

1. break down the complicated parts of the songs and make it similar
ReplyDelete2. balance to who has the melody so we can hear it better
3. making sure our flats and sharps are more clearer and in tune
4. count rests and looking for cues instead of making an assumption
5. actually learn the notes instead of improvising

DeleteNúmero uno!- I get kinda frustrated and overwhelmed with this piece because not only is it super fast, it also has string crossings and a bunch of flats and sharps thrown in everywhere. So, to relieve some frustration from this piece, I will start slower and work my way to to the original speed. Also COUNTING is life or death in this piece because it is constantly changing time sigs. Honestly this piece is not very difficult but the little things will make the all the difference.
ReplyDeleteNúmero dos!- bring comfortable with shifting fast on the E string is my main goal in this piece. Also having solid intonation overall, is what would make thus sound alot better. That's all I really have For this piece beaches it one of those where the rhythms and styles just click eventually.
Número tres!- serendipity suite need a lot of work with balance. The point of having a movement for each section is to spotlight each instrument, but that's not really happening. I hear all cello during the violin part, all violins during the violas, and I NEVER hear the bases. So with that said we all need to practice complementing each section as apposed to fighting to be heard the whole piece
Starting off with Dragonfly, there are plenty things I could personally do to improve on this piece. The composer wanted this song to be fast and intense, and that cannot be done until I master the sixteenth note patterns, mainly the areas where I must cross strings, such as measure two and three. I have to be sure to count throughout this piece because it is easy to make the mistake of coming in early. Therefore I should focus on areas 9-27 and 35-46. Lastly, I have to be sure to pay attention to the dynamic changes in the piece due to the fact that dynamics is what makes the music interesting and intriguing. I have to work on areas with hairpins such as 54-57.
ReplyDeleteMoving on, Aspire is the piece that requires the most attention and practice because of its difficulty. The time signatures change almost with each measure, so I cannot lose focus. Intonation is a large issue, so I have to work on my left hand fingerings throughout. Also, dynamics play a major role, so I shouldn't focus so much on the notes that I forget dynamics. Moreover, there are key signature changes in measures 83 and 99, so I have to be aware of what the new key is and what that means for my left hand. I also have to play with more bow, to enhance the tone of the piece.
The main problem in Serendipity Suite is balance. I have to know when I have the melody, and when I do not. It is important to play out when I have the melody and back off when I don't. Each piece highlights an instrument, so I should listen to each section of the orchestra when it is their time in the spotlight to adjust how I play.
Dragonfly-
ReplyDeleteLook over the part I'm having the most trouble with and pizzicato the part before bowing it. Also clap the rhythms a few times. Ex: Measures 17-34
Also I need to look up more so I know when I come in, because the counting is very important in this piece.
Play louder, even if I make a mistake. Ex: playing sharps instead of naturals and all flats.
Aspire-
Keeping up with the time signature and the constant changing of sharps and flats. Ex:4-27
I learn better if I play by ear, so listen to the pieces constantly. And that can help with me knowing how certain sections sound.
Serendipity Suite
I need to make sure I’m playing sharps and flats when necessary. Also in measure 41 after I pizzicato I have to jump right into arco.
ReplyDelete1. paying more attention to the music that is in front on me.
2. practicing more on my violin during the weekend.
3. keeping up with the class while playing.
4. playing louder and using more bow to make the note sound better.
5. practice on remembering to change time signatures.
6. playing the correct flats, sharps, naturals etc.
1. I need to sit down and really look through the pieces of music.
ReplyDelete2. I need to slow down and work on the bowing styles.
3. Really check what key all the songs are in so I can play extended third and low first and second fingers.
4. Mark all the notes and signs that tell me what I need to do with the fingerings.
1) For Dragonfly, I need to slow the beginning and coda down, learn them, and then speed it up.
ReplyDelete2) In Dragonfly, possibly highlight the D.S. al Coda and Coda so that it's more noticeable where to go.
3) I really should learn Aspire, because the piece is supposed to be much faster, and I get lost when it's slow.
4) Make sure I'm landing on the correct note in measure 102 of Aspire.
5) Fit as a Fiddle: Keep moving on because at times, I get stuck on a section and end up behind.
6) Sol-La Viola: Play quieter so that the violas, a.k.a. the stars, are heard.
7) Cello Pudding: COUNT!!! My issue is that I count really quickly and end up ahead, so slow down and listen for where my part would fit in the best.
8) Oasis for Basses: Transition smoothly and quickly from arco to col legno; play the correct notes and notice the accidentals.
Dragonfly- i know i need to start counting and not just rely on my ear to tell me when to come in in the beginning. Also in measures 17-34 i need to really pay attention and not just go with "the flow" of guessing the notes, and since we also have a playing test on measures 46-58 i know i need to take at least 30 minutes out of my day to look over that thoroughly and make sure i am comfortable with the patterns and the fluidity.
ReplyDeleteAspire- for this peace i really need to count because i always wait for a cue to come in the beginning. when i practice this piece at home i have to make sure im playing the correct tempo and counting, otherwise i'm going to learn it all wrong. In measures 20-27 i need to learn the rhythm of that passage and memorize it because i always end up getting lost at that part.
Serendipity Suite- for Fit as a Fiddle i need to try and stay awake and not doze into space because the 2nds don't really play much. For Sol-La Viola i know i really need to concentrate when it comes to those e flats because i never remember to play them. Dynamics would also be nice lol. For Cello Pudding, i really need to focus on the rhythm and remember to count so i know where to come in and not be that awkward person playing on a rest. For Oasis for Basses, i need to actually play the col legno because i know i just play random stuff because om always lost looooooooooool! also in measure 25 when the 2nds switch from col legno to arco, i need to have my bow hold ready.
-Destiny Sheppard (b/c i still don't know how to make a stupid blog -_____-)
1) In Dragonfly i need to isolate certain parts and start slow to make sure i'm playing the right notes and learn to navigate to the Coda in D.S al coda so i dont get lost there.
ReplyDelete2) In Aspire, i should again play slow and make sure im playing the right notes cause the tempo sometimes causes me to panic and play wrong notes and then get lost cause i was busy paying more attention to the notes than my counting.
3) In Serendipity Suite i must count, count count, cause i've come to learn i cant always rely on the people around me to help me keep up with the tempo, and i get lost and it gets hard to get back with everyone else.
Dragonfly – First of all, I need to practice and learn the notes especially of the sixteenth notes and then speed it up and add the dynamics. When learning how to play the measures 1-9 and 62-70 (overall the portions including the sixteenth notes) in tune and fast, as the composer would want it to be, I need to slow down my playing and become accustomed to the notes (especially the flats) and the shifting in bow from string to string. Once I get the idea of it, I may gradually increase my speed while adding the dynamics. Throughout the piece, I must count especially in parts where there are many rests (measures 9-44). The dynamics should be added in after I am comfortable with playing these parts.
ReplyDeleteAspire – I need to learn the notes and be able to play them in tune (especially the higher notes which I struggle with at times). Follow and practice the fingering written down especially in measures like 29, 70, and 100. Follow the bowing like in measures 3 and 25. Count and be aware of the changes in time signature. Add in the dynamics when I am comfortable with the piece.
Serendipity Suite – Most importantly I need to learn to play loud or soft when I need to. The issue in this piece is balance. When I have the melody, I need to play loudly and as the music says (fortissimo, forte, etc.). When another instrument is playing the melody, I need to play what is shown, it being piano or fortissimo. I must remember to play accents and correct bowing. Also, work on transitioning from one movement to another smoothly by looking at the key signature, time signatures, and tempo markings before starting the next one. Hopefully, I will be familiar with each piece to the point I will not hesitate to play the next movement. Also, practice parts I struggle with individually like the abrupt switches from pizzicato to arco in Cello Pudding.
~Nicole Fernandez
Dragonfly- I need to sit down and practice measures 1-9 slowly and then gradually speed up to the tempo. I need to count more in measures 9-32 and 35-44. I need to make sure that my intonation is correct.
ReplyDeleteAspire- Shifting and intonation are two of my biggest problems with this piece. I need to practice most of the higher notes and make sure they are in tune. I need to make sure that I follow the correct bowing style. I need to practice measures 70-77 because of the higher notes.
Serendipity Suite- Overall I need to work on the dynamics. I need to work on playing the accents and correct bowings. Counting is a must. In Oasis for Basses I need to transition smoothly between arco and col lengo.
Marissa B~
Dragonfly was ok except for the dynamics. We need to make it seem like we are a dragonfly trying to get away from bugs spray.
ReplyDeleteAspire didnt really aspire me to do anything i just need to work on my articulation.Espically when cellos have to play passionetly
Sweet serendipity was ok in some parts but a mess in others.I defenitely will have to work on my counting.Oasis for bases is alright i will just have to work on my transiton from pizz. to arco. Cello pudding i get it but some of the rythms catch me off guard sometimes
Dragonfly- At the beginning of this piece it starts of fast. what i need to do to stick with the tempo is to start off slow then gradually incline the desired tempo. Also in this piece starting at measure 9 the notes get spaced out with rests. I really need to start counting and not just guessing when to play the next note.
ReplyDeleteAspire- In this piece i really need to work on my shifting since there is alot of it and that is how the piece starts off. I am also going to have to count because i really lack in knowing what to play next. i also need to really learn this piece on my own.
Serendipity Site- In this piece i need to work on my bowing since it is also a fast one like dragonfly. What i also need to do in this is to stop playing the extra notes i add on. Usually when there are repetitive notes i just guesstimate and hope its right
1. In dragonfly I need to count and practice my dynamics, especially at the beginning.
ReplyDelete2. In Aspire I need to be more confident and play the notes even if I get them wrong cause I will learn from my mistakes. Also, I need to practice my flats and naturals, and count becuase the time signature changes almost every measure.
3. In Serendipity suite i need to hold my notes longer because i rush to much into it. In addition, I need to practice my slurs and up bows becuase I get confused with starting off on an up bow. Lastly, I need to exagerate the dynamics since violas dont play loud enough in some measures.
Each peice needs a great amount of work put into them so I will practice my bowng articulation, were i place my bow, and play my notes with more confidence.
*after I finish procrastinating for 3 hours*
ReplyDelete1) in dragonfly, I need to count every measure not just a couple. 2) in serendipity I have to get the notes down (flats and stuff). 3) in aspire I need to count and not get ahead of all of the second violinists.
-Leticia
My plan to approach these three pieces are as followed: dragonfly requires you to count so you know where to come in because the time signature switches from 3/4 and 4/4 in a lot of the measures consistently so working on my counting so I can be more confident on when to come in is a priority. Also, from measure 68 to the end practice more on having the right notes in tune as I get faster. For Aspire I need to work on rhythms and counting. For this piece I need lots more practice coming in for guided study would improve my playing in this piece. Serendipity Suite I need to work on dynamics, correct bowing and rhythms. I need to slow down because I tend to rush. This will help me more on these pieces.
