Here are 2 songs we recorded in class this morning. Listen to them (ouch), and for a homework grade, give me the following:
- 5-6 measures PER SONG that need to be fixed
- How YOU (not "we") plan on fixing them
Ghost Carnival

Ghost Carnival
In evil eye I need to improve measures 31 to 36. I will practice more at home and improve my dynamics.
ReplyDeleteIn the song ghost carnival I need to improve the beginning of the song. I need to get better at the rests cause normally I play a beat earlier. Also, I need better intonation.
In Evil Eye I need to need to be louder in the beginning of the song. I will add more weight to the bow. I also need to work on the sixteenth notes from 96-97, because I don't play them fast enough.
ReplyDeleteIn Ghost Carnival, I need to improve my intonation from 35 to 38. I need to practice shifting more often. I also need to work on returning to the right tempo at 75: I just keep playing at the same speed.
In E.E.H.H. I need to work on counting and intonation between measures 102-105. I also need to work on the 16th notes in the beginning of the piece between 15-21. In ghost carnival I need to work on the counting between the 8th notes in measures 23-51. I also need to work on intonation in measures 54-62. All of this will come with practice at home.
ReplyDeleteyou spelled you name wrongg its ellie
DeleteIn ghost carnival i will work on my dynamics for the whole piece. Without dynamics that song does not sound scary at all. In evil eye and the hideous heart i will improve intonation on the parts where we play the sixteenth note scale like rhythmn
ReplyDeleteTanner, make sure that you have written about 5-6 measures per song, and also give me specifics on how you will improve those measures!
DeleteTanner, make sure that you have written about 5-6 measures per song, and also give me specifics on how you will improve those measures!
DeleteIn Evil Eye, I need to work on intonation between measures 102-105. This can be fixed by working more closely on it at home. Also, the slurred 16th notes at measure 96, it always turns out to be a big blurred mess. I need to also work on measures 47-49 and 51-52, mostly the direction of my bow and the A# in 48 and 52.
ReplyDeleteKennedy Baker
DeleteGhost Carnival: In measures 13-21 and 103-115, I need to increase my tempo because I was going slow. To fix this issue I will play at the tip of the bow.
ReplyDeleteThe Evil Eye and The Hideous Heart:In measures 23-34, I need to increase my dynamics. And to do this I will play more at the frog of my bow.
I need to work on measure 67-73 in ghost carnival, I need to work on the counting and rhythm there.
ReplyDeleteI also need to pay attention to the 3 beats of rest in measure 94 in TEE&THH.
In Evil Eye from measures 5-8 I need to maintain strong dynamics while tremelo-ing. I can improve this making measure 5 and 7 extra soft, because I tend to be louder and the dynamic contrast isn't so great. Also, I need to improve measures 31-34 by making the notes more staccato. By doing this, hopefully the end of measure 31 won't sound like a slide.
ReplyDeleteIn Ghost Carnival from measures 53 to 58 I sort of struggle with the slides (which is somewhat ironic). I will practice this part diligently. Measures 79-81 are pretty difficult to me because trill is a new concept. I will just have to practice making my trill faster and actually sounding like one, not like a bunch of mini-slurs.
In Ghost Carnival, I need to work on my shifting in measures 35-37. Also, I need to work on my counting in measures 103-116. I need to pay a little more attention to dynamics too.
ReplyDeleteIn Evil Eye, I forgot to make the notes in 47-50 (etc) accented. I did not do good dynamics in this piece either. In measures 80-89, my fingers never cooperate and I end up playing the wrong notes. I need to practice this part more often so that the fingering will stay in my head and it won't be so difficult.
I need to work on dynamics throughout Ghost Carnival, but specifically in the first 9 measures and from 63 to 75. Also, I need to count throughout to come in at the right places, such as 1-9 and 25. I will fix these spots by adding weight to the end of my bow to make the sound louder along with counting throughout the whole peice so that I do not get lost.
ReplyDeleteFor Evil Eye and the Hideous Heart, I need to work on playing louder and work on the quality of my tremelo in the begining, measures 1-14. AlsoI once again need to count all of the time so that I can stop getting lost, particularly at measure 94-97. I will fix this by practicing more and counting throughout.
On E.E.H.H I need to work on measures 31-34 still its those sharps n flats that are getting me and 102-105 b/c of the fingering, not used to it yet and it hard to go from D string all up on the E string. Also my dynamics are pretty bad,the tremlos including staccatos. In general its hard at the speed we play it due to the fact that practice it slower at home and it messes me up in class.
ReplyDeleteOn Ghost Carnival i need to work on measures 87-93 b/c you get used to the rhythem in measures 15-19 and once you get to 87-93 mentally you're ready to play the other rhythem.Another measure i need to work on is 103-109,once again the shifting comes back to bite back and in the whole song i need to really really count the beats and measures, also work on dynamics
In Ghost Carnival I need to work on 35-43. I need to work on my shifting in those measures. Also on measures 103-116 I need to make sure I'm counting correctly.
ReplyDeleteIn Evil Eye I need to work on playing measures 96-98 with the correct rhythm. I also need to make sure I'm counting in measures 27-34. When playing tremolo I need to improve my dynamics.
In E.E & H.H i need to work on measures 31-36. i get the first measures backwards and the sixteenth notes overwhelm me.
ReplyDeleteIn Ghost Carnival i need to improve my dynamics alot (yikes)
DeleteIn ghost carnival I need to work on my dynamics and counting. I should not try to rush at measure 35 so the cello can have the melody.Yea dynamics and counting!
ReplyDeleteIn evil eye I need to go at a faster tempo and I need to make sure that I play all the flats and sharps while going at a fast speed and that I improve on my shifting.
Hi Kayla! You've started with some great points, but remember that you need to pick out 5-6 measures per song.
DeleteIn Evil eye, measures 5, 6, 7, and 8 need some work. I will do better ok them by making sure I come in on time and get extended C, in measure 6. In Ghost Carnival, measures 28 & 29, & 60 & 61 need some work. At measures 28 & 29, the violas barley play. So I will do better by coming in at the right time. At measures 60 & 61, everyone is not together. So I will do better by looking up and seeing the tempo so I know where I am.
ReplyDeleteIn Evil Eye, I really need to work on the rhythm and intonation in 31-36. Those last 3 eighth notes really screw me up. Like the sliding back for Eflat. In Ghost Carnival, from the beginning of the pizzicato part to the end (I don't have the music in front of me) I need to make sure I stay focused and pay attention because I always over play the C-G eighth notes.
ReplyDeleteEvil Eye and the Hideous Heart:
ReplyDelete-Measure 32 and 34, I need to play the staccato notes more prominently.
-Measure 73 I need to be louder.
-Measure 95, this goes for me and the other violists, BE LOUDER!!:)
Ghost Carnival
-At measure 23 continuing throughout, I need to play a louder pizzicato. Its hiding under the other parts!
-At measure 53, once again, I need to do a louder pizzicato.
-Measure 103 I need to count
-From measure 63-ish to 73-ish, violas are very quiet. I need to play louder.
Brooklyn Crabtree:
ReplyDeleteI need to work on the dynamics in both songs, most pointedly measures 1-5 and 96-97 in Ghost Carnival and measures 13-14, 56-60, and 11-114 in The Evil Eye and the Hideous Heart.
I need to especially work on making sure counting is a priority in Ghost Carnival (measures 23-59, 84-86, and 103 to the end).
I need to work more on intonation in Evil Eye (measures 15-22, 32&34, and especially 95-97). Better dynamics at the Dismembering the Corpse part, because I honestly didn't even notice them until now (oops).
Overall my intonation needs to be improved; it isn't bad, but there is still much room for improvement.
But I do have a compliment for the whole orchestra: from The Hideous Heart part to the end, the dynamics was (were? I'm not sure what the grammar would be here) much better!!!!
Best Wishes!
DFTBA
Ghost Carnival:
ReplyDelete-Measures 35-43: I have to work on shifting and counting.
Evil Eye and the Hideous Heart
-Measure 46-53: Counting and dynamics

Evil Eye
ReplyDelete- In measures 5-8 the notes are out of tune and we didn't do the dynamics
-Measures 47-54 we didn't do the accents and we started to rush. I can fix this by doing the accents and listening to the metronome and subdividing
-Measurs 73-75 we played piano really good because no one plucked. I can fix this by actually playing
Ghost Carnival
_-We came in late in meausre 7 and that can just be fixed by counting an dnot just guessing
-Measures 27-35 you can hardly hear the 1st and 2nds plucking back and forth. It can be fixed by just playing louder because its supposed to be forte anyways
-The whole last page sucked because the whole orchestra didn't play with confidence and the notes were out of tune
In Ghost Carnival I need to work on playing louder in Measures 23 to 25 and measure 28 to 30.
ReplyDeleteIn The Evil Eye And the Hideous Heart in measures 5 to , I need to make the transition from piano to mezzo forte more distinct. In measure 34 transitioning into measure 35 I come in late so im going to count there.
-Ghost Carnival
ReplyDelete- In measures 1-6 i think we can put accents and we need to be louder!!!
-In measures 6 we need to count so we can come in at the right time
-Also in measures 7-9 we need to make our decresendo more defined so people can here how we go from forte to metso piano.
-In measures 15-21 our notes sound like mush and we should also use some vabrato (if I spelled that right)
-in measures 43-51 some of the notes we played sounded kinda of choppy we can always make it more flowing.
- I am going to practice more at home on vabrato and all my dynamics.
Jessie Boulware (:
ReplyDeleteEvil Eye- In measures 50-52 I think the rhythym scares some a bit and they start to back off or play quieter and I can work on that by counting so that I can get the rhythym down. In measure 93, the 16th note slurs sound like they're all jumbled together. I can work on the by moving my left hand faster. In measures 96-97 we back off a little bit again because of the 16th notes and the notes don't sound seperate like they're supposed to be. I can work on this by using a shorter bow to make the notes sound like they're different from each other.
Ghost Carnival- In measures 15-21 we rush with the 16th notes and I can fix that by subdividing and listening to the metronome.
-The Evil Eye and the Hideous Heart
ReplyDelete-From measures 27-30 i think that we can really show the dynamic changes more
-In measures 31-35 in that whole section we need to try to get more staccato and also the part where we do E to E natural to D to B flat can sound better
-in measures 56-59 when we are answering to the cellos we it sounds fine but it would be scarier if we came in at piano and cresendo to metso forte
- 81-81 FIRST VIOLINS REALLY NEED TO GET THE RIGHT PITCH OF THAT NOTE
- In measures 102- 105 we just need to get the pitch right and do the cresendo
- I am going to work on everything i said up there and also work on trying to play it at the right tempo.
In E.E.H.H I will need to work on my pace and intimation from measures 15-18. Also, I will need to work on counting and intonation from measures 32-34. Finally, I will need to make sure that my D# is in tune foe measures 87-88. In Ghost Carnival I need to work on countings for the triplets and sixtenneth notes starting in measure 113. Also, work on my big glisondo and make sure I have enough bow for it in measure 130-132. Finally in the beginning, to make sure I count between those sixteenth notes from measures 1- 13.
ReplyDeleteIn Evil Eye and the Hideous Heart I need to work on my intonation from measures 15-22. I will practice those specific measures over and over again until I can play them in tune at the correct tempo.
ReplyDeleteI also need to work on the tremolo in measures 9-12. Whenever I play that section, I can feel my elbow moving more than my wrist, so I will try and play using my wrist more.
Throughout the whole piece, I need to pay attention to accents and dynamic changes.
In Ghost Carnival, I always rush in measures 87-93. To fix this, I will count and subdivide. Also, in measures 103-109, I need to work on shifting so that I can play the notes in tune.
Lastly, in measures 130-132, I need to work on bow speed so that I don't run out of bow before the glissando is done.
Ghost Carnival: At the beginning (measures 1-7) I need to come in on time, and I will do that by counting. In measures 116-123 I need to count and look at you because it sounds like a mess. I also need to play louder throughout the whole piece because you cannot hear the second violins.
ReplyDeleteEvil Eye: In measure 61 and 62 I was playing the notes as 8th notes and adding more notes then there are suppose to be instead of playing them as quarter notes. In measures 63-71 I need to pay more attention to the decrescendo because it sounds like more dynamic.
*one dynamic.. sorry.
DeleteWhat I need to work on is The Evil Eye and The Hideous Heart - measures 32 through 35. My problem is not my right and left hand individually, but its both of them coordinating with each other. I also need to work on the beginning of Edward Scissorhands - measures 1 to 2. I need to smooth out the notes. In all of my pieces, for viola, measures 5 through 6 are pretty easy. All I need to work on is dynamics.
ReplyDeleteEvil Eye
ReplyDelete-Dynamics in measures 1-4 I can improve by working on bow speed and the amount of bow I use.
-Measures 31-34 can be improved by taking the measures one note at a time. And I can try not to rush in the end of 32 and 34.
-Measure 56-60 I don't have any dynamic change when I play.
-Measure 93 I need to work on the slur of sixteenth notes. I can slow it down like when Mrs.Bawcum first when over it.
Ghost Carnival
-The beginning is not very suspenseful so I could try to use more aggressive bow strokes.
-Measures 15-21 counting. I could clap the rhythm first then progress to arco.
-Counting from measure 23 to 58.
-Measures 82-112 have a major counting problem.
ghost carnival- measures 1-15 i need to play louder so you can hear the bass. also i need to put more dynamic changes in measures 9-13
ReplyDeleteevil eye- measures 1-8 need to be more clear and i can do this by putting a accent. also 19-21 and 27-34 it sounds like we have no idea what we are doing . I can fix this by actually playing the right notes and taking it slow when we practice.
