Listening Assignment- Concert Orchestra

Here are the 3 songs we recorded in class this morning.  Listen to them (ouch), and for a homework grade, give me the following:

- 5-6 measures PER SONG that need to be fixed
- How YOU (not "we") plan on fixing them
Addams Family
Sneaking Suspicion
Goblin Boogie

This will be due Thursday, September 19th by midnight.

  1. In Addams Family the violins need to work on measures 9-17 and remember to take the repeat. IN Sneaking Suspicion all sections need to practice subdividing. The first 13 measures are very important cause that's where we rush and lose each other. In Goblin Boogie dynamics is key in this piece. Measures 25-30 what we have to work on because of the dynamics change. I plan on fixing my playing by going home and practicing more often and asking for help in class more instead of talking in class.

  2. In Sneaking Suspicion we all need to work on staying together and not rushing, it's a problem mostly because the piece is pizzicato, but if we subdivide it would help a great deal. In Addams Family the Cello section needs to work on placing their fingers in the right spots for the slurs in measures 1-8. In Goblin Boogie we need to work on the dynamic changes from 25-30.

    1. Lexi, you're making some good points, but I need to know how YOU plan on fixing these spots.

  3. In Goblin Boogie at 12 we were rushing and not staying together manly because of the pizzicato. In Sneaking Suspicion on 29 we didn't stay together. In The Addams Family in 16 because of the repeat.

  4. To be honest if most people would take their instruments home and practice for 15 min there would be a big change in how we play. In Adams family we don't keep together in measure 9 because no one has taken the time to practice it would sound better. In sneaking suspicion measure 5 we need to sub-divided and for violins we have piano as our marking and we need to pluck softer and closer to the finger board. last but not least goblin boogie its sounds ok but we really need to listen to the metronome and sub-divide because we rush way over what our tempo marking is. :)

    1. Holly, this is a good start, but you need to give me 5-6 specific measures per piece that are problem areas and the tell me how you plan on working towards fixing those problem areas.

    2. in my opinion in measures 24-30 of the Addams family, it sux, if we could focus, it would b better..... and of course the cellos go 2 slow in the beginning 2 the point where I can't stand it. this song is supposed 2 b quicker and spirited........ In sneaking suspicion, in 25- 30, we all rush and then I have 2 rush so I can keep up...... we should fix this by relaxing a tiny bit. but of course no 2 much. and in Goblin Boogie measures 9-14 we need to work on dynamics, and not rushing, and the piece sounds boring without it. to work on dynamics I learned that it sounds better if to play loud we play closer 2 the bridge. to play softer we play closer to the fingerboard

  6. In Goblin Boogie, I need to work on measures 9-17 on the DYNAMICS and subdividing. I will fix this by taking my instrument home and practicing the dynamic changes and playing slower until i don't rush. In Sneaking Suspicion, I need to work on measures 1-13 on subdividing and dynamics. All the way from measure 5-49 there are multiple dynamic changes that I need to pay attention to. In Addams Family, I need to work on measures 9-18 and 26-30 on SUBDIVIDING and adding in the slurs. Almost all of the violins rush during these measures. I will fix this problem by taking my instrument home and practicing these measures at a slower tempo until i get all the notes down and pay attention to the F natural in measures 26-30.

  7. In my opinion to the three pieces we are playing we need to count, subdivide, and not rush. Those are the main problems.

    1.Goblin Boogie.
Measures 8-16 for violin 2 we need t count and listen to those playing around us and not rush on the eighth notes.
Measures 17-25 the 2nd violins need to stay together and we can improve by watching the front chair giving q's(setting a beat)
Measures 50-end we tend to rush a lot than any other spot in the piece. That comes down to better counting and listening to your peers.
    2.Assams Family
in my opinion this piece is bad and we all know it. Personally I need to take a look at this one b/c I focus my time on the other two instead.
Measures where we snap at the beginning and towards the end we need to be together and not snap on the rest.
Measures 9-16 I need to work on b/c I have lost my rhythm to that section, I used to play it decently.
Measure 24 the D that violins are playing is out of tune. We can fix that by tuning our instruments.
Measures 25-29 are way bad, we are not together and we are not playing a low F on the G string.
Also make sure you take the coda.
    3.Sneaking Suspension
This piece is tied with goblin bogie. It sounds good through out the whole piece. Make sure you don't rush like measures 13-23. Measures 19-36,. Finally 49-end. All that can be solved by counting and not rushing. Key factor is that this is a pizzicato piece so we tend to rush.

  8. In my opinion if everyone just went home and worked over the measures they struggle in the songs would sound a lot better.
1.Adams Family- The whole piece still needs a lot of work but measures 25-30 are where we fall off . I plan on going home and working through those measures piece by piece but by starting off pizz. Then working my way to arco and then try to get faster until I reach the tempo it should be.
    2. Goblin Boogie- This is my favorite piece and really dont see much to change but measures 49 to the end we continue to rush like crazy main reason because its pizzacato. I plan on counting and most Importantly subdividing and will try to keep the rest of the violas together.
3.Sneaking suspicion- The dynamics in measures 29- 36 need work we always get it one time but the next time it sounds boring and dead again I plan on looking ahead in the measures to see which dynamic change is coming up and also paying attention to the markings on my paper

  9. I need to not rush on sneaking suspicion
I need to count on goblin boogie
I need to slur better on Addams family

  10. Well with all the peices we are making progress.
    1. with goblin boogie I plan on practicing playing measures 8-12 with a louder forte, And not rush of the pizz and sub-divide.
    2. with sneaking suspicion i am planning on playing pizz without RUSHING, and play better dianamics, And really SUBDIVIDE.5-13 with better dynamics.
    3. now Addms Family...... i will practice playing measures 9-17. And when playing pizz , sub-divide, and play dynamics.ALWAYS SUBDIVIDE. But get the main theme at the same time and play in harmony.

    1. I agree with Bryan. In each piece we are making progress but still need some more work. The main reasons are rushing, dynamics, and subdividing.

In The Addams Family/ the basses need to work on sections 9-17 including the repeat. We also need to work on our slurring.

In Goblin Boogie, the basses need to work on measures 30-37.

In Sneaking Suspicion, Everyone needs to work on measures 1-5 including the repeat. Remember to take the Repeat!!

I plan on practicing on all of this at home for about 25 minutes a day.

  11. 1.Sneaking Suspicion-When I listen closer to Sneaking suspicion,I can hear after the repeat on measure 12 that people have forgotten to go back to five, considering a few violins/violas suddenly were silent. People might need to put a big reminder on that spot so it can't be missed. I should work on my dynamics through out the whole piece as it sounded like I never changed the dynamics.

2.Goblin Boogie-Right before we hit measure 9,it sounded people were falling behind in the piece. If that part is a problem for people, they may want to consider practicing that area more so the same mistake doesn't occur again. Measure 33 for cellos is what is confusing, since some people are beginning either too quick or slow. I think it's cause there's no bow lift there so it may have confused some people. It even confused me as people seemed to have been on a rest longer than we should have. This is a critical part to keep count on so it doesn't sound to messy. The thing I just feel the most insecure about is some notes sound out of whack, including myself. I should practice on where I place on fingers. Also 50 to 53 you can hear people rushing, but pull together on measure 54 when the rests came in. We REALLY should consider subdividing on this since there's so many eighth notes.

3.Wow,this was really a mess when we recorded this. Right when the metronome got louder on measure 13,people began falling apart probably due to the face many people felt they were rushing and trying to slow down, causing a wreck to happen. I need to getting my fingers on the right places on the finger board and in the right amount of time. It's always one or the other for me since it's such a stretch for me. Lastly, people keep forgetting to either repeat or take to coda, which makes such a yucky sounds. We may want to practice on that more as well.
Most importantly,we all need to subdivide.

  12. 1. The Addams Family - The main problem is in measures 9-17. The slurs need some major work, but getting the notes in tune is also a big problem. It's also the same with measures 25-30. Also, the snapping could use a bit of work, and counting the rests for the coda is a HUGE problem. I'm going to put a lot of pressure on the slurs especially since i have the most truoble with those in this piece.

    2. Goblin Boogie - I think the cello, bass, and viola sections have this piece under wraps. The violins, not so much. Some of the notes in 9-17 could use some work, because i noticed that there were quite a few people out of tune. The dynamics in 25-29 are good, but they aren't great. The pizzicato parts in this piece could use a bit of work also. I'm going to start working on measures 13-20 because i can't always get the notes in tune completely.

    3. Sneaking Suspicion - The beginning 4 measures of this piece are great. It's when measure 5 arrives that thinks start to crack. It's easy to tell that the violins haven't fully mastered this part because not all of us are together completely starting at measure 5. After that, the problem snowballs. Another problem is a bit of rushing because it is pizzicato, since some people might forget to subdivide. It is somewhat obvious at measures 13-20 and especially at measures 29-36. Dynamics are a huge challenge in this piece also. My major downfall in this piece is the dynamics, especially the mezzo-forte and forte parts.

  13. 1. Addams Family - The main problem for The Addams Family is in measures 25-30. The slurs are the main issue but the most of the orchestra does not play together in measures 25-30. What I need to work on for The Addams Family is playing the right notes during during measures 25-30, the slurs, and going to the Coda when needed.

    2. Sneaking Suspicion - The main problem in Sneaking Suspicion is in measures 21-27. The orchestra just seemed to fall apart when this section was reached. We couldn't stay together. What I need to work on in Sneaking Suspicion is remembering the repeat for measure 5, not rushing, and changing dynamics when needed.

    3. Goblin Boogie - Measures 7-12 seem to be the problem. The violas and violins seem to get lost and play either a couple beats ahead or behind. What I need to work on is the dynamic change in measures 25-30, not rushing, and working on notes in measure 40.

  14. In The Addams Family; measures 9-17 and 25-30 because we need to play the slurs more fluently. One thing I have noticed is that on measure 30 at least one person plays an extra F natural.

In Sneaking Suspicion; measures 13-21, 21-29, and 29-36 because the first set for the dynamics, second set for rushing, and third set for the constant changes in dynamics. I need to subdivide for measures 21-29.

In Goblin Boogie; measures 25-30 because the dynamic changes are like a cross between a crescendo and a suddo (I believe this is how it is spelled). I need to make a large difference between my dynamic changes.
