SERENADE LISTENING ASSIGNMENT

Woooooo.  Here are the three rehearsal recordings today during class.  Listen to all three of them and give me a list of 3-4 spots that you will practice in each one (so 9-12 spots total).  Be specific with measure numbers and what elements you're going to rehearse on your own....rhythm?  Intonation?  Style?  Dynamics?  etc.

This will be due by MIDNIGHT on Friday, April 19th.  Please remember that late submissions will not be accepted.  If you have technology trouble, you may hand-write your submission and turn it in to me Friday during class (or print out a screenshot of your submission and give it to me).

Eleanor Rigby- Serenade

Smells Like Teen Spirit- Serenade

Walk This Way- Serenade

  1. In Eleanor Rigby, I will play measure 5-10 softer, and also play the first few measures precise because it is the first thing the audience will hear. Last, I will practice the last few ending measures because we need to all end at the same time and count in our heads. In Smells Like Teen Spirit, I will practice the pick up to 29 because we never come in at the right time there. I will also fix the very first note we play because it is out of tune. Last, I will practice measures 37-41 because I need to transition from C natural to C# better. In Walk this Way, I will practice measures 11-19, to figure the rhythm out better. I will also play measure 25 better, because it is out of tune. Lastly, I will practice the basic rhythm in measure 7 to perfect it.

  2. Eleanor Rigby
-The first 3 measures specifically first note of whole piece to make sure we start at C sharp from the beginning because it seems like we slide Into it and that's kinda nasty sounding
    - 5-10 would be next spot when we are just playing the same note over again I need to play softer for we won't drown out the melody.
-11-13, it seems like we are not all together and jumbled up and out of tune also
-the last 3 measures because as an orchestra we rush it and we are not together. That's the last notes the audience will hear and we need to end strong.
    Smells like Teen Spirit
    - the first 9 measures sound just totally out of tune. I will work on stretching my 3rd finger on g string for C sharp and 2 finger on g string move it closer to first
    - 13-19 I think the seconds need to work on blending in the background. I think we need to work on intonation of course and more piano
-37-41 just sounds a hot mess. I need to learn that part. Those measures just sound like random e being played
-57-65. I admit I do get bored playing the same rhythm over again 5 times but you can kinda hear how we start to fade and I need to work on making it sound exact sound with energy every single time
    Walk this Way
-11-19. I need to work on rhythms. I tend to forgot to slur certain notes and they get mashed together and I create that mushy type of song which is definitely not good for this type of music
-23-29. In these measure I need to work on intonation. If I can get the notes in tune, I won't mess up the rhythm . I understand when to play them, but I start to concentrate on getting them in tune and I mess up the rhythm also
-Through the entire piece I need to practice on making sure the accidentals in the piece are in tune. Such as in measures 7-9, the main tune.

  3. Eleanor Rigby:
-In measures 10 to 14, the eighth notes need to be shorter and more exact sounding.
-The 1st violins should play out a bit more.
    Smells Like Teen Spirit:
-In measures 21-28, remember the G#!
-Around measure 37, it sounds very muddy.
-Towards the end of the piece we tend to not stay togeher, so count!
    Walk This Way:
-Around measures 23-25, it is very legato. It would sound better if it were shorter.

  4. All of the songs has the same problems in general. For instance, in sweet child of mine and eleanor rigby, all of the other sections over powers the smaller first violin section. To fix this, all we have to do is tone it down by a lot and let the firsts to play out. Another problem, is the timing of each section. Half of the room is at another part while the other half is either a measure back or a measure up. To fix this, all we have to do is to subdivide and look up a bit more.

  5. Eleanor Rigby -
    • In measures 1-14 and basically throughout the whole piece, the first violins need to play out more. All the other sections overpower the first violins, so we need to play louder when we have the melody.
    • Measures 39-41 and 20-23 sound very muddy, so we need to listen to each other and count so we are all together.
    • I need to use more bow during this piece because I noticed I only use about half of my bow.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit -
    • In measures 7 & 8, the first violins that play the top notes need to work on intonation.
    • We all need to subdivide and listen to each other throughout the whole piece, specifically in measures 37-40, so we all stay together.
    • I need to remember to play G#!

    Walk This Way -
    • In measures 11-19, we need to count and subdivide because we didn't really sound together.
    • In measure 25, I need to remember that the last set of sixteenth notes are different from the notes before it.
    • I need to pay attention to the accents and tempo markings during the whole piece.

~We defenitly need to workon the sour c.
~Since this is a short piece I feel like we should play more powerful and use vibrato as much as we can to male the piece stand out more
~ I need to work on the measures 10-13
    Walk this way
~ in measure 7 we are starting on the same time
~ in measures 11-19 I feel like we allslowly die off and then it sounds ugly and weak.
~ I need to work on measures 11-19 while listening to a metronome on high volume and measure 25 paying careful attention to intonation
    Smells like teen spirit
~The beginning of teen spirit sounds muddy we need to be counting and we need to pay attention to the key signiture
~Starting in measures 29-41 we fall apart a little, we need to listen to each other and count
~ I need to work on measures 29-41 I am going to play it slowly and gradually getting faster and to the correct tempo

-I know that I personally need to work on remembering the repeat of measures 1-4.
-Measures 10-15 sound muddy which can be fixed by simply listening to each other.
-I'm also going to work on counting at measures 27-28 so that I can't figure out when to come in.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit
-Whenever we all have the main rhythm, the accent is always placed on the eighth note instead of where it should be on the quarter note.
-Also with that same rhythm, we all need to focus on our intonation.
-Cellos in particular need to remember the g# in measures 21-29.
-At 37 up to the transition into 41, we sound muddy and gross which definitely needs to be fixed.

    Walk This Way
-at 11-19 and 27-31, we play the quarter rest as if it were an eighth rest. We just need to count and remember that different measures have different rhythms.
-I personally need to practice the intonation of the sixteenth note rhythm at 34-37 and 49-54.
-we also need to work on articulation and playing the main rhythm together throughout the piece.

Also all three pieces lack dynamics in a serious way which is making them sound less interesting than they should.

  8. Eleanor Rigby:
~In measure 1, we all fade in, so we need to come in strong and stay strong. Also I think 1st violins E's could be a lot more in tune.
~At measure 10, we all loose it! It gets so cloudy, so it just sounds like blahblahblahblah. To fix this, 1sts need to be a lot louder, and everyone else needs to get very quiet.
~I think Intonation is also a big factor. I feel like 1st's G on the D string tends to be a little out of tune.
~ I am going to work on my intonation throughout the entire piece, and using more bow. I have a habit of only using a little bow.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit:
    ~INTONATION throughout the entire piece!!
~We need to make sure we are counting and subdividing throughout the entire piece, but especially from 21 to 57.
~I honestly think we are completely capable of playing this piece. We need to be more confidant in ourselves. Most of the time you can only distinctively hear 1-3 people from each section. We just need to believe in ourselves that we can do this.
~ I really need to work on the rhythms in this piece. I know I can do them, but I need to work on them and gradually get faster, and faster.

    Walk This Way:
~ We really need to work on intonation from 11 to 30.
~ We get extremely muddy from 17 to 19, 23 to 30, and 34 to 37. I think we need to slowly play it over and over again until we get the rhythm and then gradually increase the tempo.
~In measure 42, we all get a little confused, so we just need to practice that so we become confidant on that part.
~ I really need to practice the rhythms and intonation in this piece, especially in measure 49! I cannot get that rhythm! i am going to have to practice it over and over and over again to get it right. I need to make sure I see the key signature and abide by it the entire piece.

  9. Eleanor Rigby-
I'm playing the piano but on the quarter notes throughout the piece I will make them shorter and crisper. Also I will pay attention to the dynamics and make sure sure I look up when we slow down at the end.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit-
Again I am playing the piano and basically have the same main theme throughout the whole piece but I can make sure I keep up and don't start slowing down. And also I need to make the piano part grungier like we discussed in class.

    Walk This Way-
For this one I think it is especially lacking in dynamics and kind of mushes together. It just isn't exciting or captivating. So dynamics need work, then intonation in ms. 49-54 because it is fast and is just a tough part to play. So that section in particular is my main focus in this one. Finally, blending as a whole orchestra, making sure the firsts can be heard over the AWESOMENESS of the CELLOS!!! But in all actuality the melody needs to be heard and the firsts need to play much louder and some of the lower strings need to be softer.

  10. Eleanor rigby:

    - measures 4-6 we need to make the sixteenth notes more fluid.

    -work on dynamics

-when the violas have the melody we xhould play louder

    Smell like teen spirit:

-in the first couple measures we need to count and be together

-we also need to have a better intonation when playing the melody
-i will do better with intonation in the beginning

    Walk this way:

    - i will play measures 23-25 shorter

    - in the beggining we have to be together
-dynamics need a little more work

    ReplyDelete
  11. Eleanor Rigby- I will try to be more consistent and try not to rush in measures 1-4. The same thing in measures 5-9. When the eighth notes come in they also seen to rush a little bit. Measure 15-23 when the Violas have the melody I'll work on being louder.

Smells Like Teen Spirit- The opening measures are clean but too clean. It sounds like a marching band instead of a rock band. I'll work on making my sharps sharper, particularly in measure 9. Measures 21-29 sound lazy and some parts are not in tune.

Walk This Way- Measures 7-11 should be more crisp and I'll try to make it crisp by using short bows. Personally, I need to work on knowing how long we repeat certain measures and when to take the second ending, for example in measures 31-34. Finally, in measures 34-38 where the violas have the 16th notes we need to be short and louder so we can be heard separate from everyone else.

  12. Eleanor Rigby-
    What I heard:
    -Better C Natural
-Slight rushing with the 8th notes in measure 5
-More MetsoPiano from all the sections playing 8th notes
    -Better dynamic contrast between 32&33
    How to work on it:
-Really focus on subdividing, intonation, and dynamics.

    Walk this Way-
    What I Heard:
-Better Accents and less muddy in measures from the pick-up before 7-11
-at 34 the our notes should be more crisp.
-our accidentals should be more in tune
    -the dynamics around measure 38
    How to work on it:
-warm-ups at the beginning of class maybe?
    Smells Like Teen Spirit-
    What I Heard:
    -accents on measure 21
-G Sharp needs to be more in tune
-the beginning needs to be more together
    How To Work on It:
-play the beginning and do accents

    ReplyDelete
  13. Eleanor Rigby- You can't even hear the first clearly until we get to measure 10. I kind'a need to listen to my other violas' at measure 5-7.
S.L.T.S- The SHARPS are really bad and thats also what's causing the muddy sound from two different notes I think we all should pay a closer attention the key.
Walk This Way- It sounds like the first violins got ran over by a bus and tried to walk it off around 6-14. The violas' need to play a little louder when we have the melody.

  14. Elenor Rigby - I personally will be working on the first four measures on coming in at the right times. Also, I am going to work on counting the rests throughout the peice, and coming in at the right time. Last, I will work on watching the tempo and making the beats more precise and louder.
Smells like teen spirit - I am going to definately work on staying with the beat from 9-29. After that, the other big things are intonation and holding the notes the right amount, not too long.
Walk this Way - The biggest issue with me is intonation throughout the piece. Some notes are played flater than they should be. Also, I need to work on the repeated sections and get used to repeating it and taking the forth ending when it comes. Last, style. Less rigid, more loose and more like a band, less like an orchestra.

~~ 15-17 need work because the violins are over-powering with our "chuck-chucks." (balance)
~~ The 4th finger E in mesaure 18 and the high B in measure 19 were flat. (intonation)
~~ In measures 8, 13, and 26 the A did not last the whole measure. It faded, so I need to work on bow control.
~~ We weren't rhythmically together or in tune in the last 3 measures.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit
~~ I need to practice accenting the right notes throughout the piece.
~~ The higher part (which I play) in measures 6-11 was out of tune.
    ~~ The G# in 20-22 was flat.
~~ There was an intonation problem from 37-41.

    Walk This Way
~~ There were intonation issues throughout the piece, but they were scattered.
~~ The last 16th note run in measure 25 is still out of tune and not quite together. I need to practice that measure and the transition from the E string to the A string.
~~ We were rushing from about 34-38.(I can try it with a metronome.)
~~ The 4th finger Es from 38 to 49 (and quite possibly throughout the rest of the piece) need to be stretched a little further.

I will work on each component listed independently at home, among other little things I didn't mention. I can't wait for the concert!!

  16. Elanor Rigby:
~ Measure 3 and 4 need to be shorter
~ Intonation gets sloppy towards the end
~We need to listen to eachother and look up at the end because right now it sounds like poop.
I personally think we ,Violas, rocked measures 15 through 23

    Smells Like Teen Spirit:

~Needs to start off with a better forte in the beginning
~Measure 21 through 28 sounds very like blah and muddy. We need to be less blah.
~The ending needs lots of work. NO OPEN A's. Play fourth finger.

    Walk This Way:
~We need to be more stacco throughout the piece. In the orginal song it is very stacco and you can hear each note. While as when we play it sounds like we are playing all these different notes at once and its like ?!?!?
~Ination needs to be enforced in measures 31 thorugh 33 and 46 through 48
~Don't rush in measures 49 through 52. The first time we did that in 34 through 37 it sounded better then the end.
    ~Ending wasn't that bad :)

  17. Walk This Way
for measures 46-49 I need to practice my nowing because I tend to try to play it at the frog, and that makes it a lot harder than if I played with the upper half of my bow. Also I need to practice getting up to tempo in that part.
for measures 34-38 the cellos sounded really scratchy. I think to help this I will practice making everything flow and in tune first slowly, and gradually grt faster like we do in class.
for measures 23-30 the cello part looks really easy but it needs to be more in tune and I need to practice subdividing because I always try to play early after the rests.

    Elanor Rigby
for measures 1-5 as silly as it sounds because it should be an easy section, the instruments playing this rhythm arent playing together. To fix this I would practice subdiving when im practing so that when im in class I know im coming in k n the right beats.

for measures 26-33 I need to focus on articulation and playing the slurs correctly because that part sounds messy.

and finally for the last 3 measures I need to practice my intonation and be sure I'm accenting the final notes. I also need to remember to look up for the rit.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit
measures 9-21 need to be more in tune and we need to draw way more attention to the decrescendo in 11&12. to fix this on my own I will highlight the dynamics in my part and make sure I am using concise bowing when I practice.

measures 21-29 sound really bad in the cello section. to fix the intonation and know the rhythm better I will lsisten to the song and then try to mimic what I hear when I play it.

also for anytime the melody of the song is played (ex m1-9) I need to practice accenting the correct notyes and making sure F# and naturals are in tune
