TED talk...seeing sound with fire. This one's for everyone!

Okay, y'all know how much I love a good TED talk.  This one is really interesting, because the presenter  talks about visualizing sound and how different frequencies can be relayed with visualizations.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT!  Watch this TED Talk with Jared Ficklin.  In the comments section, tell me three things:
1.  What unconventional sound(s) you would like to see visualized.
2.  How you would like to visualize that unconventional sound (art?  Software?  Ruben's tube? Something new and different?)
3.  What kind of implications the visualization of sound could have on closed captioning.  Ficklin mentions using it in scary movies--what other applications are out there?

This assignment will be due by midnight on Monday, February 11th.

  2. 1.) Someone playing a theremin (electronic instrument which you don't have to directly touch to play) or the sound made from rubbing your fingers around the top of a partially filled wine glass.
2.) A rendering algorithm, a Ruben's tube, with a fireworks show, or with the computer language (example of the computer language which i'm talking about: 0110100110001100101)
3.) a.) Certain colors of the light spectrum to go with louder and quieter sounds or higher-pitched and lower-pitched sounds on TV.
3.) b.)The real time audio wavelengths could also be used in Slapstick or live-audience comedies and it would be interesting to be able to see the visual of laughter and a visual of the sounds of clumsiness.

  3. 1) I would like to see three completely different genres of songs and guess which genre is which! It would also be neat to see sounds of a high school cafeteria. You would be able to clearly see which sounds were at the beginning and end of lunch because of the levels of excitement. You may also see if something unusual or funny happend. (The more exciting an event the louder people are)
2)It would be cool to see sounds through water and lights. (I loved the fire and I think Lindsey's paint idea is really cool)
    3) At the beach, you hear the waves whoosh back and you can imagine the next sound when they come back to shore.

  4. 1. I think it'd be cool to visually hear traffic on a busy highway since there's all the different cars and trucks make different noises and also, they'd all make similar sounds that you could see when they went over bumps or cracks.
    2. I liked the flame table to see sounds because it was easy to see how the sounds changed and moved.
    3. Your eyes can see when there's different types of sound, like music or speech and you can see different speeds and tones of the sound.

  5. 1.)Theme park, football game, or aquarium.
2.)I would want to visualize it as the splatter of paint from paintball guns. The more layers of paint splattered, the louder the sound waves are and vice versa. Somewhat similar to how sound waves move, but in an artistic form.

  25. 1) I think a concert would be cool to look at visually.
    2) I'd want a flame table to look at when I'm listening or playing music to see how the flames move with the sound.
    3) I think to be able to visualize the sound patterns in a music video or something like that could be intriguing other than watching the video itself. I guess that could help you understand the sounds in the music better.

  26. 1)A space shuttle countdown and launch.
2)Either a program that paints colors based on the pitches of notes or firework explosions that are synchronized to the notes of a song.
3)Easier for deaf people to "hear" speech patterns so they actually see the sound waves instead of just reading the closed captioning. - Joseph Hubbard

  27. 1)A concert or a musical performance that could be seen instead of heard
2)Being able to paint a picture based on the song, and the colors being based on how high or low the note is, how loud, and maybe even for emotions (like blue and gray for sad, red for angry, orange and yellow for up beat, etc. etc. etc.)
3)It could be a new way to visualize and understand music that sound cant quite cause. (And it would be cool to hang a song on a wall.. just saying...)

  29. 1) i think it would be interesting to see the sounds of nature. A day of the wind rustling the leaves, birds chirping, or rain on pavement. There are so many different sounds that you notice just by sitting outside for an hour, I would like to see those visually.
    2) A collage of different shapes corresponding to different pitches and shades of colors corresponding to volumes of the sounds.
    3) It would allow for the hearing impaired to more actively participate in virtual conversations (i.e. Skype), or in instances where close captioning would be used, because they could see the inflection in voice and music.

  32. 1) The transition of classes in a high school.
    2) I'd like to see it with colors. The different voices of people will present different colors, making a melody of colors.
    3) It could show mood, and how intense (loud or soft) something is said. Reds could be an anger, or loud talking person. And Blue could be soft, quiet spoken people.

  33. It would be interesting to take his idea of documenting the sounds at the skate park and showing the location of cheers and such, and apply it to a cross country course. The main sound being measured would be cheers and they would typically be right along the course. This model would take into account the times of the sounds along with the location on the course. I would expect to see somewhat of a wave following the lead pack and then a steady cheer as others pass. There would probably also be a swell in volume near the finish as athletes are encouraged to pass each other.
I think sound applied to closed captioning would best represent the rhythm of the speaker's voice or soundtrack. The audience would be able to tell if the mood is frantic or relaxed and flowing.

3.Visualization of sound is really cool and so is closed captioning so you can see the sound on tv,but it doesnt seem as though it would serve that great a purpose, because honestly looking at frequencies on the bottom of my tv would do nothing but annoy me.

    3. I had never thought about how much an audience misses when forced to completely rely on closed captioning. 2) I'd like to see the sound of a Diesel engine on the fire table thing. I don't think I'd be abel to interpret it through software and anything larger as a visualization for such a complex sound would be hard to keep up with.
    3) A cool application for this would be for PA systems, just in case people can't hear. If they can't, they would be able to visualize announcements and some of the tonal aspects of voice that don't carry over super well through plain text.

Just for kicks, I'd also like to see Elegy, because I think it would probably look like Saving Private Ryan or the Battle at Helms Deep...

    2. Art that includes assigned colors for distinct sounds would probably be a good representation of a kitchen, and to make it more detailed, the colors could be darker for louder sounds and lighter for softer sounds.
    3. If closed captioning were to use techniques similar to these, the viewers could experience a more accurate illustration of the sounds in the scene they are watching. For example, it would easier for them to see multiple sounds going on at once.

3: Instead of just seeing the words.. you can see how their said.. or the sounds if there's a crash you can actually see the disturbance in the sound waves. It just let's you know the intensity of how something is said or how it sounds.

    2. Ruben's tube, because it easily  demonstrates the different frequencies and sound waves.
    3. Watching the sound waves makes it much more interesting than just listening to a sound. It also makes it easier for the hearing impaired to visualize the waves, since they can't hear the sounds. It would no longer be just subtitles in a movie or deaf people using sign language to communicate, but they could also visualize the sounds themselves.

    2. I believe that either art or a high tech software would visualize the rain forest particularly well. You could portray all the different sounds using different colors, and the amplitudes would differ as well.
    3. If sound waves or some visual representation of sound was shown on closed captioning, then people who have a harder time hearing could take in background noise a lot easier. It could help them infer the mood of the plot, and allow them to have the same emotions as the people that can easily hear the sound and/or music.

    2. A flame table or a painting.

    3. As opposed to closed captioning, visual representation of sound has the potential of showing the intensity or softness of a person's voice, and also the tone in which they are talking. That way people who are hearing impaired won't just be guessing how the person is talking; they'll know.

  86. 1. I think it would be interesting to visualize the sounds of an amusement park. With all of its unique noises, the result should be interesting.
    2. Using the relationship among the sounds of the park, one could use software to track many statistics for rides and park areas through colorful charts like the one Ficklin showed for the skate park.
    3. As stated in 2, one could use audio information to collect data concerning the flow of traffic in a park, how busy lines are, and how excited people may be for certain park attractions.

  87. 1) I think it would be neat to see the stands at a major league baseball game, a couple arguing, or the sounds on a boardwalk visualized. Each of those scenarios include a multitude of factors like different activities going about and different people that seem like they would be appealing visually.

2)The software I think would be the way I'd want to see the sounds represented. The different colors and shapes are more appealing to me than the Ruben's Tube.

3)Like sign language gives the deaf a manner of communication, this process would allow deaf people to visually experience what they cannot through the sense of hearing like listening to music or the emotions portrayed through speech in movies. It would allow people to further experience the little details of movies or tv.

    2.) Dominoes
3.) a- Visual sound could implicate the intensity and volume of certain sounds
b-It can also be applied to when someone is listening to a book. It can help create the scenery in that the tone and the mood and help develop the story line in a way.

    1. I'd definitely want to visualize the sounds of a karate dojo or a large urban city. Also It'd be pretty cool to see Philaharmonia's conversations visually.
    2. I'd like to view sound as many different colors on one blank canvas. Each frequency would have its own color and depending upon volume and tone, the shape of the color would be formed.
    3. I could definitely benefit the deaf. also it could help us to tune our instruments even better, just as intonia (spelling?) does!! It would be cool for concerts as well to see the music as it is being played.

  93. 1) I would like to see the sounds of a busy New York City subway station or street visualized.

    2) It would be cool to see these sounds visualized through a painting, like splatter art, or in a fireworks or lazer show, kind of like the one at Stone Mountain.

    3) Visually representing the amplitude or frequency of sounds through different colors could help a hearing impaired audience experience a movie or television show more like a normal audience does. It would also help hearing impaired people if they could use it in real life conversations so they could understand sarcasm and things like that.

  95. 1) The kitchen of a very busy restaurant, I bet some interesting patterns would emerge.
    2) I think it'd fun to see it in flashing lights of different colors. Maybe having the wavelength of the color of light correspond to the pitch. I guess this would be better expressed through some sort of software rather than a guy waving around different colored banners and whatnot.
    3) I think it could make the whole experience more meaningful. It's usually the sounds, music, or inflection of someone's voice that gives you goosebumps, and I think that being able to interpret those same sounds through a visual representation would make those scenes that much more powerful. I think another cool application would be some sort of device for the deaf that let them see the sounds around them. I saw one time that there is this blind guy who has a device that plays a pitch that corresponds to the color of what the device is pointing. It said that he likes how different colors sound. What if deaf people could say that they like how sounds look?
